Discussion Megathread: 2018 Illinois Primary

Posted: 20 Mar 2018 06:25 AM PDT

Introduction

Today, Illinoisans head to the polls for the Illinois primary, the second in 2018 (after the Texas primary earlier this month). Illinois is host to a number of competitive primaries this year, ranging from the gubernatorial election, where incumbent Republican Governor Bruce Rauner is seeking a second term, Attorney General, where incumbent Democrat Lisa Madigan is retiring after nearly 16 years in the position, and a number of Congressional elections, including IL-03, where incumbent Democrat Dan Lipinski is facing a spirited challenge by fellow Democrat Marie Newman.

All 118 seats in the Illinois House of Representatives and 39 of the 59 seats in the Illinois state Senate will be up for reelection this year. Democrats hold a 67-51 majority in the state House, requiring 4 more seats to obtain a veto-proof majority, while Republicans need to net 10 seats to capture the chamber. Democrats also hold a veto-proof 37-22 majority in the state Senate, while Republicans need to net 8 seats to capture the chamber. State judicial elections, and elections for Cook county row offices will also be held.

How to Vote

Registration: Illinois' regular voter registration period expired nearly a month ago, but voters are eligible for grace period registration up to 7PM on the day of the primary election. Each county handles this differently, and only a limited number of offices will be available to handle this. If you haven't registered and would like to do so to cast a ballot, search "Grace Period Voting [County Name]" with your county name to pull up a list of offices.

Eligibility: If you are currently 17 years old but will turn 18 and be eligible to vote in the November 6th general election, you are able to cast a ballot in the primary. Voters must also have been residents of their precincts for at least 30 days prior to the primary election.

Voter Identification:

  • Photo ID (Drivers License or State-Issued ID)

  • Last 4 digits of SSN/Utility Bill/Paycheck/Government Document showing name and address

  • College ID with copy of student residency lease or postmarked mail sent to student at the address listed

Hours: Polls are open from 6AM to 7PM local time.
