Virginia

U.S. House – Virginia 10th District: Northern Virginians will be watching closely as Incumbent-Rep. Barbara Comstock attempts to defeat Republican challenger Shak Hill to hold onto Virginia's 10th District in the U.S. House. Comstock has represented the district since 2015 after she served in the Virginia House of Delegates for four years. Hill is a retired Air Force pilot and former deputy assistant to President Donald Trump in 2017. Hill is conservative who has been endorsed by Sebastian Gorka, Trump's former deputy assistant.

U.S. Senate: Three Republicans will battle it out to be the GOP contender to take on Democratic-Incumbent Sen. Tim Kaine for his seat in the U.S. Senate. Kaine, who ran as Hillary Clinton's vice presidential candidate in 2016, has held the seat since 2013. He has previously served as Virginia governor, lieutenant governor and chair of the Democratic National Committee. He is running unopposed in the Democratic primary.

Anyone not already registered won't be able to vote, Virginia doesn't allow same-day registration. Also of note is some district's primaries have already been decided by caucuses or conventions.

  • Polling stations will be open on Tuesday, June 12 from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. If you need to find your local polling station, click here.

Nevada

Nominees for one of the nation's most closely watched U.S. Senate races and Northern Nevada's lone U.S. House seat — as well as the winner of a fiercely competitive contest for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination — will all be decided on June 12.

Republicans in Washoe and six other Western Nevada counties will also pick the candidate likely to become the next representative in sprawling, GOP-dominated state Assembly District 32, while Reno Democrats will settle a four-way race for an empty seat in deep-blue Assembly District 24.

South Carolina

Elections officials expect about 100,000 voters from Greenville to Walhalla to cast ballots in congressional, statewide and county races during Tuesday's Republican and Democratic primaries.

A competitive contest for governor and a race featuring a crowded field of candidates running to replace U.S. Rep. Trey Gowdy are expected to slightly boost turnout over the 2016 primaries that drew about 15 percent of Upstate voters to cast ballots.

The two big races on both sides will decide the parties' nominees for governor. Gov. Henry McMaster of Columbia faces a challenge in the Republican primary from four opponents — Lt. Gov. Kevin Bryant of Anderson, former Lt. Gov. Yancey McGill of Kingstree, state agency director Catherine Templeton of Mount Pleasant and Greenville businessman John Warren. A runoff is likely in two weeks between McMaster and either Templeton and Warren.

Both parties have "advisory questions" on the ballot this year. The results of these questions aren't legally binding, but they allow the parties to take their voters' temperature on a particular topic.

Maine

Residents in Maine who are headed to the polls are using ranked-choice voting for the first time in a statewide primary in the U.S., and they're also deciding whether to carry it forward to the November federal elections.

Voters are ranking their candidate preferences from first to last, and the election is over if one candidate wins a majority on Tuesday. If not, then the ballots will be shipped to the state capital for additional rounds of tabulations next week.

A field of 11 Democrats and Republicans are seeking party nominations for the opportunity to succeed the term-limited governor.

Tuesday's primary elections are being decided for the first time with ranked-choice voting. Voters will rank their candidate preferences from first to last, and the election is over if one candidate wins a majority.

If not, the ballots will be shipped to Augusta for additional rounds of voting next week. The last-place candidate will be eliminated and votes reallocated. There can be as many rounds as necessary until a candidate gets a majority.

North Dakota

Tuesday, June 12 is the date of North Dakota's Republican and Democratic primaries. Primaries allow registered voters to select candidates to run in the general election, held Tuesday, Nov. 6. North Dakota's general election will include races for Richland County offices, the state legislature and the U.S. Congress. In many cases, the primaries establish final election candidates.

Voters will select candidates for a six-year term in the U.S. Senate. In November, incumbent Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., will face either U.S. Rep. Kevin Cramer, R-N.D., or Thomas O'Neill, another Republican. Heitkamp was elected to the Senate in 2012. Cramer is the Republicans' endorsed candidate.

Additionally, voters will select candidates for a two-year term in the U.S. House of Representatives. In November, Democrat Mac Schneider will face one of the following Republicans: Tiffany Abentroth, Kelly Armstrong or Paul Schaffner. Tom Campbell, who dropped out of the race, is still on the primary ballot. Armstrong is the Republicans' endorsed candidate.

  • Polling locations cannot open earlier than 7:00 a.m. and must be open by 9:00 a.m. with the exception of those precincts in which fewer than 75 votes were cast in the last general election. Click here to find your polling place and for more information.

Wisconsin Special Elections

Tuesday's elections will fill the seats of former Sen. Frank Lasse (R-De Pere) and former Rep. Keith Ripp (R-Lodi), who stepped down in December to take jobs in Gov. Scott Walker's administration. Walker didn't call special elections at the time. Voters in those districts — with the help of a group run by former Obama Attorney General Eric Holder — sued and courts ruled Walker had to call the special elections.

In Senate District 1, Republican Rep. André Jacque of De Pere faces Democrat Caleb Frostman, the former head of the Door County Economic Development Corp. The district includes all of Door and Kewaunee counties and parts of Brown, Manitowoc, Calumet and Outagamie counties.

In Assembly District 42, Republican Jon Plumer, a Lodi Town Board member and owner of karate schools, is running against Democrat Ann Groves Lloyd, a Lodi alderwoman and University of Wisconsin-Madison academic adviser.
