Hi, I'm Congressman Jerry McNerney and I represent California's 9th Congressional district, which includes parts of Contra Costa, San Joaquin, and Sacramento counties. I sit on the House Energy and Commerce Committee's Subcommittee on Communications and Technology – which oversees the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). I am an original cosponsor of the Save the Internet Act (H.R. 1644) because I believe it's critical that my constituents and all Americans have strong net neutrality protections.

Net neutrality is essential for American innovation and competition, as well as ensuring that the internet is a gateway for economic opportunity and a forum for the free flow of ideas. Since FCC Chairman Ajit Pai's announcement of his intention to roll back net neutrality protections, more than 8,000 of my constituents reached out to me to express their opposition. On December 14, 2017, the FCC voted to repeal net neutrality protections at its Open Meeting. I have consistently spoken out against the FCC's actions and prior to the December 2017 meeting, I submitted a formal request to address the full Commission at the Open Meeting so that my constituents' voices could be heard. My request was denied by Chairman Pai, but Commissioner Mignon Clyburn – who voted against the repeal – submitted my written statement for the Meeting's official record. Following the FCC's decision, I held a net neutrality town hall in my district. Veterans, librarians, students, and small business owners all spoke out about the harmful impacts they will face from the elimination of net neutrality protections.

Last week, the House Energy and Commerce Committee favorably reported the Save the Internet Act to the full U.S. House of Representatives, and tomorrow the House will consider this crucial piece of legislation. The Save the Internet Act will restore meaningful net neutrality protections that the FCC repealed, and I am urging my colleagues to vote "yes" on this legislation.

Thanks for all of your great questions, which I hope I answered adequately! I'm going to pop out now, but will be checking back here throughout the day. So ask away and I'll do my best to answer you!! (And if you want to learn more, check out my book! GunsDownBook.com)

For years, gun safety advocates and lawmakers have sought to solve the nation's gun crisis by asking for politically palpable incremental reforms like background checks or closing the terrorist loophole. Such a strategy appeals to risk-averse politicians worried about alienating moderate voters. But, it has fallen short of channeling widespread public support for gun safety policies into real change. In 2016, I founded an organization with a bold vision for a new movement dedicated to building a future with fewer guns. My book, Guns Down: How To Defeat The NRA And Build A Safer Future With Fewer Guns, provides a roadmap for saving countless lives by raising the standard for gun ownership in America and making guns significantly harder to get.
