Good morning, afternoon, or evening from warm, sunny Israel.

.חבריי האמריקאים

As the US 2020 General Election has finally come to a close with President-elect Joe Biden chosen as the 46th President of the United States, we'd like to recap what seemed like an eternity for the subreddit and many users alike.

Below you will find a variety of statistics and information about our Election Coverage 2020, as well as a bit of background on what made it happen, some of our favorite moments, and a big announcement for the /r/Politics community. We'd love to hear your feedback and thoughts on how we ran our election coverage and the time leading up to it. Please let us know which joke or meme was your favorite as well!

The winners of the Presidential Prediction Contest will be announced after the Georgia runoff elections.

Acknowledgements

First and foremost, I would like to take the opportunity to thank my amazing teammates for their hard work over the past several months and beyond, who made our coverage. Although you often see moderators out and about, that is only the tip of the iceberg for what goes on behind the scenes. Below are shout outs to just some of the many team members who work day in and out to make the community possible:

  • /u/Isentrope led our efforts to compile regular polling and state election threads, putting together a small team of moderators to organize the information and collect it together. Later in the cycle, he helped guide the creation of a bot to automate parts of the process.
  • /u/Chris_Hansen_AMA, /u/dottiemommy, /u/JonAce, /u/likeafox, /u/_mr0, /u/remiel, and /u/TheUnknownSticher put together our final election coverage system in the week leading up to the event.
  • /u/Chris_Hansen_AMA, /u/dottiemommy, /u/Isentrope, /u/_mr0, /u/Ominaeo, /u/Qu1nlan, /u/remiel, /u/thebsoftelevision, /u/TrueAmurrican, and /u/wil_daven_ updated our live thread around to clock to bring you the latest updates.
  • /u/wildaven started our press briefing coverage, with several hundred threads throughout the Trump presidency. We plan to continue this coverage for Biden and beyond.
  • /u/Qu1nlan runs our excellent Ask Me Anything (AMA) program, which has been instrumental in bringing politicians, journalists, and advocacy groups to the community. Notable was Stacey Abrams, who helped register over 800,000 disenfranchised Georgian voters and flipped the state blue in the 2020 election. See our calendar for upcoming AMAs.
  • /u/Calahara and the chat moderation team give users a place to connect and converse with each other in real time.
  • /u/exoendo, /u/MuffinMedic, ,/u/samplebitch, and /u/txmadison wrote the multiple bots that improve our workflow. These tools help check for rule-breaking content, automate the creation of discussion and megathreads, and allow the team to interact with Reddit across multiple platforms.
  • Admins from the Reddit Trust & Safety, software engineering, and infrastructure teams helped ensure everything ran smoothly and safely.

/r/Politics Discord Server

In addition to record-breaking subreddit engagement, users have shown throughout the election and months leading up to it that they have a strong desire to connect with their fellow politically-involved community members from across the world. Chat has been a part of /r/Politics for a long time - first as IRC, then OrangeChat, and now Reddit Chat. As usage has grown rapidly and our chat moderators struggle to keep up, we've outgrown these systems and the tools they offer.

Therefore, we are thrilled to launch the official /r/Politics Discord server. The brainchild of our chat moderator /u/Calahara, thousands of moderators, Redditors, and subreddits are already engaged in a multitude of servers and are familiar with the platform. Migrating to Discord gives us more flexibility in creating an environment that fosters communication, improves moderation capabilities, and helps users further engage with us and each other.

We've been rolling the server out to our Reddit Chat regulars over the past week and invite you to come check out the newest part of our community, discuss the latest happenings in politics, and try and top us at our meme game. The link can also be found in our sidebar.

Verification

Users are required to verify their Reddit accounts upon joining to participate. The system uses the AltDentifier bot to verify Reddit accounts. Both the Discord and Reddit logins occur directly through the respective websites and the bot never has access to your personal information.

Statistics

Our non-stop election day coverage began with our first polls open thread on 11/3 03:00 AM and ended with the completion of the President-elect Biden's victory speech at 11/7 07:31 PM, lasting for 4 days, 16 hours, and 31 minutes. We hosted a total of 87 threads, including:

  • 1 live thread
  • 5 poll open threads
  • 78 results threads (including 22 fun themes)
  • 1 projection megathread
  • 1 victory speech thread

Users upvoted 442,936 times and discussed the election in 2,093,874 comments. They spent 2,093,100 coins to give 9,088 awards, worth over 20 years of Reddit Premium.

Highlights

Our Biden victory megathread quickly rose to become the #1 thread in all of /r/Politics history with 207,357 upvotes, beating the previous record by over 50,000 votes.

The live thread ran for over 72 hours straight, our longest single thread to date.

In addition to the non-partisan election coverage, we also used this opportunity to have some fun and engage with the community. Our meme game improved substantially through a series of themed results threads. Some of our favorites include:

  • Our now infamous shitposting began with the flirty Part 30, where we may have gotten a bit too frisky, leading to...
  • When a user replied with the 1 millionth election comment in Part 41, it finally hit us in there was no escape.
  • Moderator /u/TheUnknownStitcher slid into Part 44 and dropped a beat in his debut single. He will be releasing his first rap album shortly and proceeds will go towards repleneshing the team's coffee & alcohol supplies.
  • Part 69, where users quickly replied with over 30,000 comments saying "Nice."
  • Part 76 "No Declaration" - While waiting on day 4 for the election to be called, we paid homage in to the 1776 Declaration of Independence and its acknowledgement of the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
  • "A New Hope" for Part 77 in honor of the 1977 release of the first Star Wars film.

Saturday Morning Political Cartoon Thread

Posted: 14 Nov 2020 08:15 AM PST

It's Saturday, folks. Let's all kick back with a cup of coffee and share some cartoons!

Feel free to share political cartoons in this thread. Besides our usual civility policy, there are three rules to follow:

  1. Every top-level comment must contain a political cartoon. This means no text-only top-level comments.
  2. It must be an original cartoon. This means no photographs, no edited cartoons, no memes and no image macros. OC is allowed, as is animation.
  3. Each top-level comment should only have a maximum of 3 cartoons.

That's all. Enjoy your weekend!
