Introduction

Today, voters go to the polls in Virginia to nominate candidates for the November elections. Each voter may choose to cast a single ballot in either the Democratic or Republican primary. Early voting for the primaries ran from April 23 to June 5.

At the top of the ticket in the Democratic primary, voters choose their preferred candidates for governor, lieutenant governor, and Attorney General. Current governor Ralph Northam is prohibited by the constitution of Virginia from immediately running for a second term.

Democrat, and former governor of Virginia, Terry McAuliffe is expected to comfortably win the nomination for governor. His opponents for the democratic nomination are state senator Jennifer McClellan, former Delegate Jennifer Carroll Foy, Delegate Lee Carter, and Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax. Incumbent Attorney General Mark Herring faces a primary challenge from Delegate Jay Jones, and the field for the lieutenant governor nomination is wide open among a field of half a dozen candidates.

The GOP has already nominated their statewide candidates in a party convention early May. Businessman Glenn Youngkin received the republican nomination for governor, Winsome Sears for Lieutenant Governor, and Del. Jason Miyares for Attorney General.

In those districts with contested primaries, there are nominations to some House of Delegate seats, and municipalities like Norfolk and Richmond will nominate candidates for citywide offices including treasurer, Commonwealth's Attorney, and sheriff.
