Introduction

Today, voters in Texas' 6th Congressional District go to the polls in a special election to fill the seat of the late Rep. Ron Wright, who died of Covid-19 in February. The 6th District lies south of the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area, has a partisan lean of R+6 according to the Cook Political Report, and has been held by the GOP since 1984. It has been trending bluer in recent years with the growth of the D-FW metro area.

On May 1st of this year a nonpartisan, blanket primary was held in which the 23 Republican, Democratic, and independent candidates ran. Two Republicans advanced to today's special election runoff.

One is Texas state representative Jake Ellzey, who gathered 13.8% of the vote in the primary. The other is Susan Wright, who is the widow of Rep. Ron Wright and who gathered 19.2% of the vote in the primary.

Susan Wright has been endorsed by former President Trump. As the Texas Tribune reported, 'On the issues, there does not appear to be much daylight between Ellzey and Wright.' This election is therefore being widely viewed as an early test of Trump's influence over the GOP in a post-presidential capacity, though this is complicated by the fact that his endorsement was made less than a week before Election Day.

Polls will close at 7 p.m. Central Time.
