Discussion Megathread: AL, CA, IA, MS, MT, NJ, NM and SD Primaries

Introduction

Today, voters in 8 states head to the polls for primary elections to decide the nominees for Congressional and statewide office. This is the largest number of states holding primaries for the 2018 midterm elections. A number of competitive primaries are being held for seats that will be hotly contested in the general election. If you're in one of these states, please take the time to vote if you're eligible to do so! Regardless of whether you're looking to Keep America Great or to #Resist, primary elections play an essential role in the American democratic process. When voters are engaged, democracy wins.

Overview

Below is a chart with relevant elections and poll times (all poll times are in the local time zone):

State Primary Type Polling Place Polls Open Polls Close
Alabama Open* RO SOS Website 7AM 7PM
California Top Two SOS Website 7AM 8PM
Iowa Open SD SOS Website 7AM 9PM
Mississippi Open RO SOS Website 7AM 7PM
Montana Open SD SOS Website 7AM 8PM
New Jersey Closed SOS Website 6AM 8PM
New Mexico Closed SOS Website 7AM 7PM
South Dakota Semi-Closed RO SOS Website 7AM 7PM

RO - A runoff is required if no candidate receives a majority of the vote in Alabama and Mississippi, or if no candidate receives at least 35% of the vote in South Dakota.

SD - State has same day voter registration, subject to certain requirements.

*Alabama has runoff elections if no candidate reaches a majority of the vote. If you voted on a partisan ballot in the primary, you are not allowed to cross-over vote in the runoff election. Thus, if you voted D in the primary, you cannot vote in the R runoff primary, assuming one occurs.

Primary Types

Open: Voters of either party affiliation may vote in whichever primary they choose. A registered Democrat may vote in the Republican primary and vice versa.

Semi-Closed: Generally, this means that registered voters of the major parties may only vote in their own primary, but voters who have not registered as a member of a major party (no party affiliation) may vote in one or both of the major party primaries.

Closed: Only registered members of a party may vote in a party's primaries. Many states, to prevent party "raiding", also impose earlier deadlines on party switching from regular registration deadlines in order to discourage people from changing their affiliation closer to the election.

Top Two: In this kind of election, all candidates for an office, regardless of party, stand for election on a single primary ballot. The top two vote getters, regardless of political party preference, advance to the general election.

Results

NOTE: California notoriously has numerous absentee ballots that need to be counted. Results for that state are likely subject to change over the course of as many as several weeks, especially if the margins separating second and third place candidates are narrow.
