I'm the Austin-based National Correspondent for USA TODAY, covering Texas, the border, immigration, weather events, breaking news and occasionally Latin America and Mexico. I began at USA TODAY in 2007 as the Baghdad Bureau Chief and covered the war in Iraq for two years. Later I moved to New Orleans, where I covered post-Katrina recovery, the BP oil spill and several Gulf Coast hurricanes. I came to Austin in 2013 and have been covering the border and immigration, as well as the gun control debate and Hurricane Harvey's impact on South Texas. I was also in Puerto Rico for Hurricane Maria landfall and covered the Santa Fe Texas school shooting.
