| Discussion Thread: Louisiana Gubernatorial Election | November 16th 2019 Posted: 16 Nov 2019 07:21 AM PST For a partial list of all elections happening in Louisiana today, including ballot measures and state executive elections, click here. There are 175 candidate races and 123 propositions on ballots across the state. Gubernatorial ElectionIncumbent Gov. John Bel Edwards (D) and businessman Eddie Rispone (R) advanced from a primary election for governor of Louisiana on October 12, 2019. The general election is November 16. Edwards is the only Democratic governor in the Deep South, and he is the only Democrat holding statewide office in Louisiana. He defeated U.S. Sen. David Vitter (R) in 2015 and succeeded Bobby Jindal (R) in the governor's office, breaking a Republican trifecta in the state. Edwards has said that Louisiana went from having a budget deficit to a budget surplus during his tenure. He has emphasized increasing funding for K-12 schools, raising teacher pay, and expanding Medicaid in the state as other accomplishments of his administration. He says Rispone would make cuts to healthcare and education if elected governor and has criticized Rispone's business record. Rispone describes himself as a conservative outsider and job creator, pointing to his background as a businessman. He highlights his support for President Donald Trump (R), who dually endorsed him and Ralph Abraham (R) in the primary election. Rispone has characterized Edwards as a "liberal, trial lawyer, tax-and-spend career politician" and has criticized Edwards' record on the economy, public safety, immigration, and healthcare. The gubernatorial election coincides with elections for the state Senate and state House, meaning that all three trifecta components are on the ballot. Republicans maintained their majorities in the state House and Senate following the October 12 elections. Democrats would need to retain the governor's mansion to maintain a divided government, while Republicans would need to win the gubernatorial election to gain a trifecta. State SenateElections for all 39 seats in the Louisiana State Senate are taking place in 2019. The primary was on October 12, 2019, and the general election is on November 16. State House of RepresentativesHeading into the November 16, 2019, general election, Republicans are seven seats short of a 70-seat supermajority in the Louisiana House of Representatives. Twenty-four seats are up for general election. Party control of eight House seats will be decided in the general election. Republican candidates need to win all seven races in which they are facing a Democratic or independent candidate in order to win a veto-proof House majority; Democratic or independent candidates need to win at least one of those races to prevent that from happening. Heading into the election, five of those seats are held by Republicans, one, District 50, is held by a Democrat, and one, District 62, is held by an independent. The eighth race in which party control will be decided is between a Democrat and an independent in District 21. The other 16 races are between two candidates from the same party.
