A Brief Update from the r/news Mod Team Posted: 07 Jun 2020 09:06 AM PDT Many horrible things have happened in recent weeks that have shed light on different complex and important issues. There is little if any insight we can provide that hasn't already been given. What we want to do in this space is speak about our moderation philosophy in light of current events, and update you on how that philosophy has informed what we're doing now. We believe that, as a news subreddit, being available to spread information is especially important right now, so any shutdown was considered out of the question and would have been counter-productive. But we wholeheartedly support the subreddits that did shut down in protest. We will continue to aggressively enforce our rule against racist, bigoted comments and have recruited extra help and are putting in extra hours in order to make this a certainty, even as racist groups try to exploit the tensions being inflamed right now. We pride ourselves on trying to be relatively impartial, non-partisan, ideologically pluralistic, etc. compared to other news and politics communities on reddit. But one issue that it is impossible to be neutral on is racism. We will continue to enforce our rules against doxxing, advocating violence, etc. with equal aggressiveness. We believe the admins have not done enough to stop hate subreddits on reddit, to protect other subreddits from brigading and harassment by said subreddits, or to enable mods to prevent hate on their own subreddits. We join others in demanding that this be changed. Thank you, best wishes, and stay safe P.S. If you would like to know the mod team's personal thoughts on recent news: This subreddit's "owner" is named after an important US general, and appropriately, we found a statement from a more recent general that sums up our feelings well. Our team is very diverse. Ideologically, geographically, demographically, in age, in personality, etc. yet we found that this represented the consensus of our overlapping thoughts on the situation and, also appropriately enough, from someone of the same party as the sitting President he is commenting on, hopefully making it somewhat politically neutral.
