YouTube and all Approved YouTube Channels have been removed from our Approved Domains List

Recently, YouTube implemented a change to how channels and users were coded in their public URLs. This change has effectively rendered our Approved YouTube Channels list ineffective, as Automoderator is incapable of properly identifying the channels that we have approved, leading to seemingly random removals of videos even if they're from an approved source.

Our team has always sought to be neutral arbiters in moderation, and that approach applies in how we review comments and posts as well as in our tooling and automation. Our goal is to ensure that our policies and workflows apply equally regardless of source or position.

We had considered a number of alternatives to try and keep these channels on our Approved Domains List, but each presented difficulties that we felt were impractical:

  • Had we chosen to keep our approved channels list, we would have to regularly manually review the entire list of channels for updates, which we lack the resources to do;
  • If we had chosen to implement additional automation to check for updates, this would draw from our limited resources that are being utilized for other functionalities, and would also have the appearance of giving special treatment to certain sources;
  • If we chose to allow all YouTube channels, this would have undermined the purpose of the Approved Domains List and opened the subreddit to content that failed to meet the neutral criteria set forth in the Approved Domains List.

As a result, we have decided that the fairest option would be for us to remove YouTube entirely from the Approved Domains List. This is the option we feel best embodies our approach to moderation, and removes the appearance of favoritism that users may be left with from the seemingly random removals of certain videos. We would like to stress that this removal is completely a result of technical issues and not related to the content of any videos that may have been posted. Should Automoderator or YouTube resolve this issue, the team may revisit our decision in the future.
