Discussion Thread: TX-06 Special Election

Introduction

Today, voters in Texas' 6th Congressional District went to the polls in a special election to fill the seat of the late Rep. Ron Wright, who died of Covid-19 in February. The 6th District lies south of the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area, and has a partisan lean of R+6 according to the Cook Political Report. It has been held by the GOP since 1984. It has been trending bluer in recent years with the growth of the D-FW metro area, although both Sabato's Crystal Ball and Inside Elections both rate the race as Likely- and Lean-R, respectively.

This election is a nonpartisan, blanket primary in which the 23 candidates all directly compete against one another for votes; if no candidate clears the 50% threshold, the top two vote-getters will proceed to a runoff election. Of the candidates, 11 are Republican, 10 are Democrats, 1 is a Libertarian, and 1 is an Independent. No candidate is expected to receive the necessary 50%.

Polls will close at 7 p.m. Central Time.
