Nominating contests for the 2022 midterms are being held in California, Iowa, Mississippi, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, and South Dakota today. Polls close at 8pm local time in CA, IA, MS, MT, and NJ, and at 7pm local time in NM and SD.

Notable Races

In California, Republican Rep. David Valadao, who voted to impeach Trump, is fighting both pro-Trump Republican challengers as well as Democrat Rudy Salas in the the blue leaning 22nd District. Rep. Michelle Steel, the first Korean-American representative, faces Democrat Jay Chen in a new district, the 45th. Meanwhile, Rep. Karen Bass is vacating her seat to compete with billionaire developer and fellow Democrat Rick Caruso in the Los Angeles mayoral race.

In Iowa, former Rep. Abby Finkenauer is seeking the Democratic nomination to challenge incumbent Sen. Chuck Grassley in the general election. Meanwhile in the House races, three Republican candidates vie to go up against Democrat Rep. Cindy Axne in the 3rd district.

Montana's at-large district has been resolved as the state has gained a second seat this cycle. Scandal-plagued former Trump interior secretary Ryan Zinke is seeking a return to Congress amid a crowded primary field via the lean-red district. In Mississippi's 3rd district, incumbent Republican Michael Guest who voted against certifying the 2020 election but voted for a commission to investigate Jan 6, is facing far right challengers.

In New Mexico's 2nd district, Gabe Vasquez and Darshan Patel are competing to challenge Republican incumbent Yvette Herrell in a lean-blue district. The reverse is happening in New Jersey's 7th district, where several Republicans are vying for the nomination against Democratic incumbent Tom Malinowski in a lean-red seat.
