Maine, Nevada, North Dakota, and South Carolina are holding primary contests today for the 2022 midterms elections. Polls close at 7pm local time in Nevada and South Carolina; 8pm in Maine; and varies from 7pm to 9pm by location in North Dakota.
Notable Races:
The spotlight in Maine is on the 2nd's Congressional District, where former Rep. Bruce Poliquin and "home school mom" Liz Caruso are competing to challenge incumbent Democrat Jared Golden. Caruso is said to be from the same mould as other extremist Republicans such as Marjorie Taylor Greene, while Poliquin had previously lost to Golden by 1% in 2018 in this R+6 district.
In Nevada, Trump has endorsed Big Lie proponent Jim Marchant for GOP nomination for secretary of state. He faces former Reid aide Cisco Aguilar. Democrats are also defending a toss up Senate seat and three House eats. Incumbent Dem Rep. Dina Titus (NV-01) faces a Bernie endorsed challenger, Amy Vilela. On the Republican side, lawyer and business owner April Becker is in the lead in the 3rd District, while Assemblywoman Annie Black has the national party's support in the 4th. In the Senate race, Trump-endorsed former state Attorney General Adam Laxalt is facing a surprisingly strong competition from army veteran Sam Brown for the Republican nomination.
In South Carolina, Republican incumbents Reps. Tom Rice (SC-07) and Nancy Mace (SC-01) are both facing MAGA backlash - Rice voted to impeach Trump, and Mace voiced criticisms of Trump's actions on the Jan 6 insurrection. They're being challenged by State Rep Russell Fry, and former State Rep Katie Arrington, both of whom have been endorsed by Trump.
Also happening today is another special election in Texas' 34th District, to replace former Democratic Rep. Filemon Vela. Republican activist Mayra Flores, who is also running in November, faces former county commissioner Dan Sanchez, who won't be.
