Changes to Youtube Submissions - Whitelist

Youtube has long been the source of a large percentage of the spam, self promotion and low effort posting that can be found in r/politics/new. It is also one of the most difficult domains for us to police effectively, meaning that /new users will find that Youtube submissions consistently of a lower quality and relevance to r/politics than other types of content.

Our solution to this is a whitelist system - we will maintain a list of approved Youtube channels, and all submissions will be automatically checked against this list. Any Youtube submission from a channel not on our whitelist will be removed. This system will actually permit us to be, over time, more permissive of Youtube submissions than we are at present. Currently, the approved channel whitelist sits at about 150 channels, but with your help we intendto be continually expanding that list - any Youtube channel that would otherwise be in compliance with our source submission policy rules will be eligible for addition to the whitelist.

Our hope is that with less spam and self promotion in /new, more of our /new browsers will be more motivated to watch the Youtube submissions we receive, as the quality of these submissions rise.

The current whtitelist

Stickied below, you will find a call for suggested channels to add to the white list. Every single suggestion we receive will be considered for addition. Keep in mind our submission policies, which will favor:

  • Reputable or notable news organizations, with a full editorial staff
  • Political advocacy organizations
  • Government organizations and political bodies
  • Candidates for elected office, and elected officals

Things that we will continue to exclude from the whitelist include:

  • Personal blogs/vlogs
  • Channels that feature mainly rehosted content, or otherwise feature no original work of their own
  • Channels that do not feature content relevant to current US political news
  • Channels that solicit users. We do not allow petitions or advertising, including political ads.

Once the whitelist is in effect a few days from now, we will also publish a Youtube channel suggestion form, which will be linked from every automated Youtube submission removal. This form will be speedily reviewed for channels that are in compliance with our submission rules, and added to the whitelist as necessary. Every addition the whitelist will be documented on this page.

How does this change make you feel? Happy? Sad? Angry? Elated? Let us know, and be sure to provide us with Youtube channels that adhere to the rules below.
