I am Timothy Snyder, the author The Road to Unfreedom: Russia, Europe, America and On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century. My new book, The Road to Unfreedom, is about global oligarchy and American politics, post-modern authoritarianism from Russia to Europe to us, and the ways that cyber can make us less free. It's a history of the present grounded in the hope that knowing our predicament is the first step to resolving it. It tells the "Russia story" from beginning to end – all of it. Ask me anything!

5/15/18 Primaries Megathread - NE, PA, OR, ID

Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania voters have a lot to think about when they hit the polls for Tuesday's primary, including a hotly contested Republican primary for governor.

Also on the card are a five-way race for the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor, a Republican primary to pick who will take on Democratic U.S. Sen. Bob Casey in the fall, House races in the wake of the major redistricting case and a host of open seats in the Legislature.

Idaho

Idaho's gubernatorial seat is wide open, after the Republican incumbent decided not to seek a fourth term. That led to a crowded GOP primary field, and three candidates have risen to the top: Brad Little, the current lieutenant governor and the establishment pick; Rep. Raul Labrador, a House Freedom Caucus founding member and the ultraconservative in the race; and Tommy Ahlquist, a former physician and real estate developer who's painting himself as the outsider.

On the Democratic side, it's a classic intraparty fight between the old Democratic establishment and a new young, progressive base.

Paulette Jordan, a 38-year-old state legislator and a member of the Coeur d'Alene Tribe, represents the young, fresh progressive face in the race. She's picked up all the national endorsements, from Planned Parenthood to People for Bernie Sanders. But the state's Democratic establishment is lining up behind A.J. Balukoff, a 72-year-old Idaho business executive who ran for governor in 2014.

Oregon

Ten Republicans are vying for Oregon's nomination for governor — the most in more than a century. The interest among candidates belies the uphill climb for the party in the Democratic-leaning state.

Of the 10, businessman Sam Carpenter, state Rep. Knute Buehler and retired Navy pilot Greg Wooldridge have emerged as leaders in fundraising and GOP straw polls. However, Democratic Gov. Kate Brown remains the favorite to win in November. Brown became governor in 2015 upon the resignation of Gov. John Kitzhaber following an ethics scandal, and she won a special election in 2016.

Oregon is among eight states where Democrats control the governorship and both houses of the state legislature. Voters who identify as Democrats also outnumber their Republican counterparts by more than 9 percentage points.

Polls close: Mail-in; ballots must be received by 8 pm Pacific time

Nebraska

Tuesday's Democratic primary in Nebraska's 2nd Congressional District, dominated by Omaha and its suburbs, features moderate former Rep. Brad Ashford fighting for his old seat and Kara Eastman, a children's nonprofit administrator, running to Ashford's left.

Ashford, a former Republican, served one term in Congress as a Democrat before Republican Don Bacon beat him for re-election in 2016. Ashford, 69, has the endorsement of the Democratic establishment, including the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, and is portraying himself as the one who can win in a swing-voting district in November.

Eastman, 46, is arguing that Democrats have lost by not offering voters a distinct choice and is campaigning on devoutly Democratic themes such as single-payer government-run health insurance, gun control and reducing climate change.
