Some clarifications regarding our civility guidelines

Hello fellow denizens of r/politics!

The impetus for making this announcement is simple: As moderators, we review a lot of comments and activity here, and with that perspective, over time we have the ability to see patterns. Sometimes positive, sometimes negative.

We are writing to everyone to remind users of our Civility rules in our Wiki, particularly our rules against threats and/or advocation of violence:

Do not threaten, advocate for, celebrate, or express extreme indifference towards any kind of action that results in or could result in death or harm (physical or otherwise). This rule applies to everyone. Users who engage in this behavior may be subject to a permanent subreddit ban.

As a team, we have seen an elevated amount of rule-breaking content in this area. We want to remind everyone that not only do we take this rule seriously, but we also need help from you, the community to help report that sort of content when you see it.

Some common examples of rule-breaking comments we see in this area involve:

  • Advocating execution of individuals (i.e. guillotines, firing squads, etc.)

And

  • Expressing desire for physical harm to come to an individual or group of people

Beyond that, in general we want to remind everyone that it is against our rules to insult users, including calling other users "shills", or "Russian bots". If you see suspicious activity, please report it and move on, and remember to attack the argument and not the user.

We realize that tensions are high in the realm of politics, and that rhetoric has been amped up as a result. However, we want to make it clear that this is something we cannot tolerate on this subreddit as we do value civil conversation and interactions between users of all political stripes.

We hope you will help us in not only reporting this content, but in keeping in mind our rules in your own personal interactions here on r/politics.

Forget philanthropy. The super-rich should be paying proper taxes. Rather than funding a better state, they hide behind the fig leaf of charitable giving.
