Last year, I served as a campaign manager to Danielle Mitchell, a doctor who won the Democratic primary but lost the general election in Tennessee's 3rd Congressional District. During that campaign, I was not vocal about my identity.

This time, in this critical US Senate race (Iowa is one of only four in the country rated as 'flippable'), I felt compelled to share my identity with the world - to me, it's not something to be ashamed of. It's not something to hide or try to avoid. It is a part of who I am, and it means I am well positioned to help represent a part of our country that just hasn't been represented well before in government. https://www.nbcnews.com/feature/nbc-out/transgender-activist-samantha-boucher-run-u-s-senate-campaign-n1062691

Kimberly Graham, too, is a very special candidate. She has spent the last 20 years serving as an attorney and advocate for abused and neglected children in the Iowa courts. She's a strong progressive, and advocates for policies like universal, single-payer healthcare, universal childcare and pre-K, taking strong action to address the climate crisis, and restoring compassion to our broken immigration system and ending the manufactured border crisis.

I am proud to work for her. In fact, I quit my job in the tech sector and moved all the way to Iowa because I think Kimberly has a real chance at not only winning, but also making a huge, positive change in our nation's government. Others believe in her, too - she was recently endorsed by Brand New Congress, and stands alongside Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Cori Bush and Paula Jean Swarengin on BNC's 2020 slate.

Unlike some of our opponents in this Democratic primary, we aren't taking tens of thousands of dollars from corporate lobbyists or writing our campaign a million dollar check. (Yes, two of our DEMOCRATIC opponents have actually done this). We're truly grassroots and progressive. You can find out more about the campaign at www.kimberlyforiowa.com

I'm happy to answer any questions you have about myself, Kimberly, or the race.

(EDIT: Regarding the title: Or, at the very least, the first openly trans* person to do so. The NBC article has more on this. Realistically, it's difficult to confirm such a thing, but they did their best)
