My name is Amanda Qualls, and I'm a Democrat running for Indiana State House District 49. District 49 is located within Elkhart County, which borders Michigan to the north, and St. Joseph County (think, Notre Dame) to the west. Fun fact: Elkhart County produces more than 80% of the world's RVs. If you have an RV or have rented one, it likely came from here!

Currently, I serve as an at large member of Goshen Community Schools Board of Education, and I'm the Board Chair of my local cooperative grocery store, Maple City Market. I've lived in Elkhart County all of my life, with the exception of my college and graduate school years. I have a BA in Art History with a minor in Russian and Eastern European Studies and a Master of Library Science degree. Professionally, I've worked in nonprofit and political organizations in operations with a focus on human resources.

As might be apparent by my educational and professional background, I never intended to run for an office like State House. I got started on the school board because public education has proved transformative in my life, and serving as a board member where I attended school (and where I currently know many students and employees), felt important. But, from that vantage point, I felt called to try to do more for our schools and our community, and that has led to my run for State House.

There has not been a Democratic challenger in District 49 since 2006, but I strongly believe this district is flippable. Indiana currently has a Republican trifecta, meaning that one party controls the State Senate, State House, and the Governor's office. In addition, Republicans have a supermajority in the house, meaning they don't need Democratic buy-in to take action.

If Democrats can pick up just one State House seat, the supermajority will be broken, and I believe that is possible this November!
