Posted: 11 Oct 2020 10:00 AM PDT Hello, r/politics users! Thank you for joining us for this "meta" thread. This thread is for users to present suggestions and discuss any issues with the mod team, and for us to keep you apprised of recent changes. We will be monitoring the thread and responding to several of your questions and comments. Please note that civility rules apply in this thread like they do in every other - we will treat you with respect, and look forward to receiving the same treatment in turn. Death & Violence Policy"Do not threaten, advocate for, wish, hope, celebrate, express extreme indifference towards, or otherwise encourage or suggest harm of any kind, violence, or death. This rule applies to everyone. Users who engage in this behavior may be subject to a permanent subreddit ban." Our rule as stated above was inspired by Reddit's own rule, though we ourselves have also chosen to take the letter of ours somewhat farther in the name of productive political discourse. We have handed out thousands of bans to people breaking this rule, in many different ways. Hoping for, celebrating, or expressing extreme indifference towards harm of any kind, violence, or death is not appropriate commentary for this platform. Please focus your discussions on political outcomes of potential deaths or harm instead, if that is on the table. Topic TuesdaysWe recently revived our Topic Tuesday series! These are mod-created threads meant to focus discussion on a single political topic of interest. These threads take significant time and effort to draft, which is why you may not see them as often as you'd like. As we grow the team and get more time on our hands (assuming that happens), we'll make more and more. Got a specific topic you'd like to see discussed in one of these threads? Just let us know! Election Prediction Contest! This year we will be hosting a contest to predict the winner of the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election! It's fancier than it sounds though... we'll be looking for you to predict the outcomes of the election in certain swing districts, and weigh your confidence in each pick. Look for a full explainer thread this coming Tuesday! Winners will be granted Reddit gold, platinum, and even the elusive Ternion All-Powerful Award! "I Voted" FlairWe've got a fancy new "I Voted" flair - apply it yourself the same way you would a state flag flair! We'll take it on the honor system that you actually voted ;) Moderator RecruitmentWe are always looking for new moderators to join our team. If you're interested, submit an application here and we'll get back to you if we think you're a good fit. Generally we want people who can really devote time to moderating each week, who can moderate and enforce the rules objectively, and who have a long and healthy post history in this sub. Frequently Asked QuestionsQ. "I see rule-breaking comments all the time, why aren't they removed?" We receive thousands and thousands of comments a day and we rely on automation and our users to report comments that break our rules. If a rule-breaking comment is not reported, a moderator will almost certainly never see it. Additionally, we are dealing with a large volume of reports each day so it takes us time to review everything. To put things into perspective, we can receive 7,000+ reports each and every day. The best thing to do to a comment that is clearly rule-breaking is to report and move on; especially in cases of trolling. Q. "There are websites on the approved domain list that I don't think should be there. Why can't we remove them?" We use a 'domain notability' requirement, which ensures that any domain that was sufficiently influential or remarkable is permitted. There are many domains that we receive regular complaints about due to content that may be inflammatory, controversial, or spurious. The fact is that we were very actively trying not to target those domains when moving to this system. We want to make user voting, the core mechanic that all of Reddit is based around, the primary method of curation on our page. Please try to remember: inclusion on the approved domain list is not an endorsement by the mod team of r/politics, or a reflection of reputability. It is solely reflective of whether the domain is notable. Q: "How do you decide what gets a megathread?" We use an objective metric based on volume of posts. We do not initiate megathreads based on perceived importance of stories. If a certain amount of submissions based on a topic are threatening to overwhelm the subreddit, at that point it will get a megathread. Q. "Why don't we have more metathreads?" We want more too. They're unfortunately very time consuming, quite draining, and heading up to the election cost more moderation resources than we can necessarily spare. We will likely have more in the future, after the election. If you want to help us clean up the sub so that we can devote more modding time to community interaction, please apply to be a moderator at the link above! With that, take it away! We may be removing any comments that are not relevant questions/comments on the running of the sub. [link] [comments] | ||
