In Arizona, nearly 6% of the state's voting-age population is Native American, reflecting the 22 federally recognized tribes in the state. On Election Day, Native voters cast over 69,000 votes in six counties with large Indigenous populations and of those, about 52,000, or 75%, were cast for President-elect Joe Biden, according to an Arizona Republic analysis.

Biden's margin in Arizona was just over 10,000 votes.

Even in the midst of a pandemic and voter suppression tactics, Native communities in Arizona voted in large numbers, casting enough ballots to account for the Democrats' winning edge for Biden.

Census data show Native Americans make up 5% of Arizona's 7.2 million residents. The state has the third-largest Native American population in the U.S., with over 160,000 Indigenous people living in the Phoenix area, according to an analysis by USA Facts.

Figuring the exact number of how Native Americans voted in the state is difficult because many live off their tribal lands and in urban settings. But an analysis of counties that overlap with large portions of tribal land shows that Native voters turned out in a big way this election and voted mostly Democratic.

What led to Native voters heading to the polls? That can be linked to grassroots efforts within Indigenouscommunities across the state.

For organizers, it's because Indigenous peoples are more comfortable working with people who understand their community, know the issues affecting them and working with someone who looks like them.
