/r/Politics is celebrating 500 AMAs!

Posted: 19 Feb 2021 08:26 AM PST

Welcome, friends, to our celebration of over five-hundred AMAs on /r/Politics!

My name is Kyle, and I run the AMA program here on /r/Politics. I send the invites, coordinate with our beloved admin pals on the Reddit AMA team, update the calendar, do the backend tweaks on AMA days so they can be posted smoothly, and update the AMA wiki. I send and receive a lot of emails, and even have the occasional phone call with potential AMA guests. It's a labor of love!

The official /r/Politics AMA program started about four and a half years ago, on August 24th 2016, with a... uh... very special AMA with H.A. Goodman. There'd been about a dozen AMAs before that over the course of several years, but it was in August 2016 that we decided to really make a thing out of it. And I want to say, we've had incredibly wild success! We've hosted senators, cartoonists, governors, reporters, mayors, and all kinds of folks in between.

We also hosted a huge number of 2020 presidential candidates. In no particular order - Pete Buttigieg, Andrew Yang, Mark Charles, Mike Gravel, Marianne Williamson, Jay Inslee, Howie Hawkins, Ben Gleib, John Hickenlooper, and of course, Ace Watkins.

Though the overwhelming majority of our AMAs have been well-trafficked and gotten tons of great questions, there are a few that really shine. Our top 3 upvoted AMAs of all time are:

  • Betsy Sweet, who ran for U.S. Senate in Maine in 2020, at 70k+ points.

  • Jaime Harrison, 2020 Democratic challenger to Sen. Lindsay Graham, at 60k+ points.

  • Stacey Abrams, who ran for governor of Georgia in 2020 and has since campaigned for voting rights, also at 60k+ points.

But records are made to be broken! I'm inviting new folks all the time - over 1,100 at this point! I'd love ideas in this thread of more folks to invite - and if you think of anyone later, there's of course our suggestion form. Our AMA topic statement (which is quite broad-ranging! I'm a big fan of the political cartoonists) can be found here, where you'll also find a chronologically-sorted list of every single one of the 500+ AMAs we've hosted over the years. That list can be a blast to peruse - a lot of hidden gems! And remember to keep track of our public calendar, where every upcoming AMA is posted - you can also check out our Twitter that we use for AMA-related invites and retweets.

But now, it's time to celebrate! Let's chat about AMAs.

  • What was your personal favorite /r/Politics AMA?

  • What constructive feedback do you have for potential tweaks to the AMA program?

  • What "genre" of AMA guest is your favorite? Local officials? Lawyers? Controversial communists? Controversial Trump lawyers? Political scientists?

  • Does pineapple belong on pizza?

  • Who's your dream political AMA guest?
