Discussion Thread: Tuesday, October 12, is the Voter Registration Deadline in NJ and VA

Introduction

In a little over 3 weeks, the states of New Jersey and Virginia will be holding their regularly scheduled gubernatorial and state legislative elections, and voting has already begun in Virginia. Both states hold unusual off year elections, but the outcome in these races, particularly in Virginia, will be closely watched by both parties as a bellwether for next year's critical 2022 midterm elections. If you're in these states, regardless of your political leanings, your voice and your vote will have an enormous impact on state and national politics.

Virginia

Virginia is hosting its gubernatorial, lieutenant gubernatorial, attorney general and House of Delegates elections. Democrats currently hold all 3 statewide elected offices and a 55-45 seat majority in the House of Delegates, which they picked up for the first time in decades in 2019.

Governor

Terry McAuliffe (D) - former Governor of Virginia from 2014-2018 (governors in Virginia may not serve consecutive terms in office), former DNC chair from 2001-2005.
Glenn Youngkin (R) - former CEO of the Carlyle Group.

Lieutenant Governor

Hala Ayala (D) - Member of the House of Delegates.
Winsome Sears (R) - Former member of the House of Delegates.

Attorney Genereal

Mark Herring (D) - Incumbent Attorney General of Virginia.
Jason Miyares (R) - Member of the House of Delegates.

Resources

Register to vote/check or update your registration (due October 12)
Apply for an absentee/mail ballot (due October 26)
Apply to be a poll worker (individual counties and cities also have separate application forms, if you search for them)
Early In-Person Voting: Begins October 23, ends October 30.

New Jersey

New Jersey is holding its gubernatorial and state legislative (including the state senate) elections this year. Democrats currently hold the governor's mansion and both houses of the state legislature.

Governor/Lieutenant Governor (single ticket)

Phil Murphy/Sheila Oliver (D) - incumbent Governor and Lieutenant Governor of New Jersey.
Jack Ciattarelli/Diane Allen (R) - Jack Ciattarelli is a former member of the General Assembly, Dianne Allen currently serves as a state senator.

Resources

Register to vote/check or update registration (due October 12)
Apply for an absentee/mail ballot (due November 1, though probably better to apply earlier, or apply with your voter registration)
Apply to be a poll worker
Early In-Person Voting: Begins October 23, ends October 31
