Here on /r/Politics, we have a long-standing but seldom-practiced tradition of discussion & debate threads known as Topic Tuesdays. These are text posts written impartially, significantly sourced, and presented with a question or questions for community discussion. They're always a good time - but because they take work and our mod team is busy keeping the sub clear, we haven't had time to make them! So here's where you come in...

We want YOU to write up a Topic Tuesday post and send it in to modmail - if your post is selected as a weekly feature, we'll award you with FIVE Reddit Platinum awards, worth 3500 coins and five months of Reddit Premium!

Topic Tuesdays should be somewhat lengthy, diving into a general overview of a topic and also giving an objective rundown of different sides of the issue and what people with various positions think and why. They should also include significant sourcing, with links whenever possible. Take a look at past Topic Tuesdays to get a sense for how we like them to look.

Guidelines:

  • The title and post must be entirely impartial, setting up a discussion and presenting any opinions balanced with others. You're not writing what you think about X - you're writing "Here's what X is, here's what different sides think, here are some things we can discuss."

  • Include several links if possible. Links should be informative, and when possible, unbiased. It's also acceptable to include links to opposing opinion articles, such as "here's an article from a conservative publication, and here's an article written by a progressive politician".

  • You may choose your own topic, but topics should have reasonable multiple sides to debate. Politicized topics surrounding race, sex, gender and so on are generally not ideal picks due to increased likelihood of breaches of our rules on incivility and hate speech. Possible topics include (but aren't limited to!):

    1. Electoral college reform
    2. Legality of marijuana/other drugs
    3. Ranked choice voting
    4. Encouraging/incentivizing voting
    5. Legality of euthanasia
    6. Tort Reform
    7. Legality of prostitution
    8. Legality of gambling
    9. Health Care - M4A, Public Option, Free Market etc

If you want to write a thread based on one of the listed topics above, awesome! Just write a post (remember to take tips from past threads), send it to modmail, and we'll get back to you if you're selected or if we want you to edit the post some. If you want to write on a different topic, just modmail with your idea first so we can let you know if it's ok.

If you are selected, your post will be submitted and stickied by a moderator account, but you'll be given full credit in the post. We'll also let you make comments on the post where we'll give you your Platinum (x5)!

We'll keep this thread open for questions and ideas - but please do keep things relevant and civil, other comments may be removed.
