Discussion Thread: 2022 Ohio and Indiana Primaries

Voters in Ohio and Indiana head to the polls today for statewide primaries as the 2022 midterms primary season begin in earnest. Voting began at 6:30am and closest at 7:30pm ET in Ohio, and from 6:00am to 6:00pm local time in Indiana.

Today's spotlight is on Ohio's open Senate seat being vacated by retiring GOP incumbent, Rob Portman. In the highly competitive Republican primary, Trump endorsee and venture capitalist JD Vance is running in a crowded field against former State treasurer Josh Mandel, anti-Trump critic Matt Dolan, and businessman Mike Gibbons, among others. On the Democratic side, 10 term Congressman Tim Ryan, who has the endorsement of Sen. Sherrod Brown as well as the Ohio Democratic Party, leads the poll against Traci Johnson, LaShondra Tinsle, and the Squad aligned Morgan Harper.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine is facing primary challenges from former Congressman Jim Renacci and farmer Joe Blyston, though polls show him with a comfortable lead.

Elsewhere in Ohio, the 11th Congressional district's incumbent Shontel Brown once again faces Bernie 2020 co-chair Nina Turner. Like the 2021 special election, today's rematch is likely to be seen as another proxy fight between the Establishment and Progressive wings of the Democratic Party. This time however Brown has been endorsed by the Congressional Progressive Caucus, muddling the ideological lines.

Meanwhile, Trump has endorsed former aide Max Miller, who has been accused of a history of aggressive and violent behavior including slapping an ex girlfriend, for the open primary for the 7th district. He also endorsed pundit Madison Gesiotto Gilbert in the crowded primary for the 13th district being vacated by Tim Ryan.

In Indiana, a crowded Republican primary is underway in the 1st district - the only competitive district in Indiana - to challenge Democratic incumbent Rep. Frank Mrvan. In the 9th district, Republican incumbent Trey Hollingsworth is retiring for a gubernatorial run, leaving a competitive primary between 9 candidates including former Rep. Mike Sodrel and former state Sen. Erin Houchin.
