| Discussion Thread: 2022 White House Correspondents Dinner Posted: 30 Apr 2022 05:28 PM PDT The White House Correspondent's Dinner (aka the "Nerd Prom") is tonight, marking the first time since 2019 that the event has been held. The White House Correspondent's Dinner is an annual tradition in Washington, a fundraising event that started in 1921, and celebrates journalists who cover the White House, as well as fundraising for scholarships for future journalists. It's most well-known for the attendance of the President and Vice President. Since the event's inception, all incumbent US presidents except for former President Donald Trump have attended at least one dinner (President Trump did attend the 2011 dinner, however, and was roasted by then-President Obama in an exchange that some have attributed to his ultimate decision to run for office in 2016). In recent years, the dinner has been known to feature a comedic roast of the sitting President, as well as a chance for the President to deliver some zingers as well. This is a relatively lighthearted event, but an enduring tradition in US politics that also serves to underscore the importance of press freedoms. The event will begin at 8PM Eastern Time.
