Discussion Thread: Hawaii Primary

Posted: 11 Aug 2018 11:23 AM PDT

Welcome to the /r/politics discussion thread for the Hawaii primary. Hawaii is one of only two states (the other being Tennessee) which holds its regularly scheduled Congressional and statewide primaries on a non-Tuesday. Hawaii will play host today to a full slate of primary elections, from US Senate, House, Governor, state executive and state legislative races. The city of Honolulu will also be holding primaries for its election. If you are able to cast a ballot today, please do so!

As always, please be mindful of our commenting guidelines when discussing. We will also be hosting a reddit chatroom for discussion. Please note that the subreddit rules apply to the chatroom, and users who are found to violate those rules can be banned from both the chatroom and the sub as a whole.

For the US Senate, incumbent Senator Mazie Hirono faces no intraparty competition as she seeks a second term in the fall. Republicans have a competitive primary with 8 candidates to determine their nominee in that contest.

For the House, a competitive primary on both sides is being held for Hawaii's 1st district, which is being vacated by Congresswoman Colleen Hanabusa, who is seeking election as Governor. The Democratic primary consists of frontrunners including former Congressman Ed Case, former state Attorney General Doug Chin and state representatives Beth Fukumoto, who left the Republican Party in 2017 and DSA candidate Kaniela Ing. The Republican primary consists of former 2014 senate nominee Cam Cavasso, and Raymond Vinole. Incumbent Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard in the 2nd Congressional District faces minimal opposition as she seeks a 4th term in office, while the Republican primary is uncontested, with Brian Evans, a former Democratic candidate for US Senate in 2014, becoming the nominee.

The marquee race of the night will be the Hawaii gubernatorial election. Incumbent Democratic Governor David Ige has faced criticism in recent months over his handling of a missile launch false alarm, but has also earned praise over his handling of the volcanic eruptions which have sparked evacuations and property damage on the island of Hawaii. Congresswoman Colleen Hanabusa is challenging him in the Democratic primary, and polls have seesawed between leads for the two. Ige himself was the benefactor of an intraparty contest in 2014, when he defeated then-incumbent Governor Neil Abercrombie by 35 points in the Democratic primary. In the Republican primary, state House minority leader Andria Tupola is favored over former state Senator John Carroll and think tank chairman Ray L'Heureux.
