Tennessee Primaries Discussion Megathread

Tennessee's primary election is here

After months of campaigning and more than $50 million in spending, Tennessee voters head to the polls Thursday decide who will be the Democratic and Republican gubernatorial nominees. Also on the ballot are primaries for the U.S. Senate, Congress, the state legislature and a host of local contests across the Volunteer State.

The race to succeed Republican Gov. Bill Haslam is the most expensive in state history, with the six top-tier GOP and Democratic candidates spending more than $50 million so far.

Haslam faces term limits and cannot seek a third term. The Republican candidates are vying to become the first GOP governor elected to take over from a member of their own party since 1869.

Here are the Republican candidates:

  • U.S. Rep. Diane Black
  • House Speaker Beth Harwell
  • Knoxville entrepreneur Randy Boyd
  • Williamson County businessman Bill Lee
  • Soddy-Daisy resident Basil Marceaux Sr.
  • Johnson City resident Kay White

And here are the Democrats:

  • Former Nashville Mayor Karl Dean
  • House Minority Leader Craig Fitzhugh
  • Gainesboro resident Mezianne Vale Payne

Meanwhile, U.S. Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., opted not to seek a third term, leaving that statewide seat up for grabs.

Republican U.S. Rep. Marsha Blackburn and former Democratic Gov. Phil Bredesen each face nominal opposition in their respective primaries and are expected to become their party nominees after Thursday night.

Is it too late to register to vote?

Yes. The registration deadline for Thursday's primary has passed. But it's not too late to register for Nov. 6 general election. That deadline is Oct. 9.

What do I bring when voting?

Tennessee has a voter ID law, so don't forget to bring identification. Here's what is acceptable, even if expired:

  • Tennessee driver's license with your photo
  • U.S. passport
  • Photo ID issued by the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security
  • Photo ID issued by the federal or Tennessee state government
  • U.S. military photo ID
  • Tennessee handgun carry permit with your photo

Where do I go to vote on election day?

Find your voting location and check your registration status at www.govotetn.com. You can also contact your local county election commission or check your voting location on your voter registration card. Polls are open from 7 a.m. CT to 7 p.m. CT.

AMA: I'm Sarah Smith, I'm running for US Congress in Washington (WA-09) on the same slate as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14), Brent Welder (KS-3), and Cori Bush (MO-01) AMA! (8/2 10AM PST / 1PM EST Start)

Posted: 02 Aug 2018 09:08 AM PDT

Hi Reddit! My name is Sarah Smith and I am running for Congress in Washington's 9th District. The 9th is part Seattle, Bellevue, South King County, and the North Port area of Tacoma. I am running with Brand New Congress and am also a Justice Democrat here in Washington fighting for Medicare for All, ending corporate bribery of politicians, debt-free education, and for what we call "kitchen-table" issues. You might've heard of Brand New Congress recently as we're one of the groups who helped Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez unseat long term incumbent Joe Crowley in New York's 14th District. We hope to do the same here in Washington.

I'm challenging a 22-year war hawk and slow-to-move incumbent, Adam Smith. Adam has historically voted for the PATRIOT Act, CISPA, and to sell cluster bombs to Saudi Arabia while they bomb innocent civilians.

The 9th is a district filled with working-class people just like me who face rising rent costs, increasing commute times, rising housing costs, and the burden of student loans. We work hard, we get sick, we're burdened with debt, and we're tired of waiting for change.

I'm running because I believe that we have a chance to truly reshape the political landscape for the first time in my life. I've been engaged in activism throughout my life but the thing that makes me most excited is being able to represent people like me. People who've had to work full-time through school, have had to face and experience houselessness, and have experienced trying to make ends-meet in a post-recession America. I have a deep commitment to progressivism and representing working-class issues. I think it's time we replace longtime lukewarm incumbents with candidates who will bring fire to D.C.

I'm ready for your questions, /r/Politics!
