A clarification of our topicality rules and submissions regarding events at the Capitol

Posted: 17 Jan 2021 07:50 AM PST

Hello r/Politics users,

We have been receiving a lot of submissions about the incidents at the US Capitol and their aftermath, and we wanted to take a moment to clarify our topicality rules for these.

Articles focusing on the identity, pursuit, arrest/charging, or actions of individuals involved in the riots are off-topic and will be removed, as they are more about the criminal justice element of the story as opposed to the broader political context. Submissions focused on statements from politicians, the incident as a whole, or new legislation related to it are more topically appropriate for r/Politics and more likely to be approved.

As the situation rapidly unfolded, we approved a number of submissions that were updated after publication and shifted to a focal point that is outside the scope of r/Politics. With the FBI and DOJ announcing investigations, we expect to see more stories regarding arrests, identification efforts, and criminal charges in the coming days and weeks.

We understand that this is not a simple 'on/off' binary line and that users may be confused as to why a specific submission was removed, but we want to make sure that the subreddit maintains its focus on politics and governmental processes and does not shift over to criminal justice stories.
